Meet Jessica Schallhorn: Strategic Finance Manager

"Parexel is focused on making a difference in the health care industry, and it feels great to be a part of such an organization! I stay motivated knowing my work can help the finance organization grow and reach its goals."

Jessica offers insight into her role and what it's like working as a Strategic Finance Manager, how Parexel supports her career development, and what she enjoys when not working.

  • Please introduce yourself and your role at Parexel.

Hi! I am Jessica Schallhorn. I am a Strategic Finance Manager for our Clinical Development department located in North Carolina, USA.

  • Can you tell me what a day in your job looks like? What are your core responsibilities?

My core responsibilities include managing, improving, and supporting central financial processes and systems related to month-end close and the revenue audit. I also help develop reports and analysis for upper management, so that they can make financial decisions at the business unit level.

  • When did you join Parexel, and why did you choose Parexel above our competitors?

I joined Parexel in April 2019 because some friends who worked here enjoyed the culture. I was most intrigued by the financial department’s goals, which have provided unique opportunities for growth and development.

  • What traits and/or skills are needed to be successful in your role?

Skills required include being detail oriented, the ability to problem solve, and following through issues until resolution. It’s also important to be flexible and open minded. Especially during busy times like month-end close and audit season, when things may come up unexpectedly that need to be resolved timely and effectively.

  • What would you like people to know about your job or department?

We offer the ability to work with, and support, people from various backgrounds, cultures, and knowledge bases in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Most of our stakeholders include financial analysts and managers, Project Leadership (PL), internal audit, external audit, and upper management. Not to mention, there is an abundant amount of opportunity still available on our team and department as we are constantly driving towards improvement and efficiency!

  • How would you describe what it’s like to work at Parexel?

Parexel is focused on making a difference in the health care industry, and it feels great to be a part of such an organization! I stay motivated knowing my work can help the finance organization grow and reach its goals.

    • How would you describe what it’s like working with your colleagues?

My colleagues are some of the most supportive and kindest people I’ve ever worked with. We understand we are all working together for a common goal and help each other when possible. My favorite thing to witness is their growth and when they are recognized for their own work.

      • How has Parexel supported your career development?

Parexel has always been supportive of finding ways to improve and how to be “easier to do business with”. When initiatives or special projects are needed within our unit, it’s always an opportunity to learn something new and develop personally and professionally. Fortunately, I have been able to be part of many initiatives and projects throughout my time here.

          • What do you enjoy when you’re not at work?

When I’m not at work, I am spending time with my family including my two kids. Time goes by fast and watching them grow is a gift. I also enjoy building furniture and completing home projects, such as painting and gardening. Doing manual labor and seeing instant improvement (while saving money on maintenance) is very satisfying.

          • Tell me three beliefs that you think would change the world to be better?

I believe that people should 1) think before they speak and be intentional about what they say, 2) pay it forward, and 3) rather than complain, be a part of the solution.

          • If you wrote a ‘user manual’ for how people should interact with you, what would be the most important point in the manual?

Be honest and don’t be afraid to be yourself!
